The Associated Press reports that at least 12 people have been killed in a mass shooting in Aurora, Colorado. 38 others have been reported injured after a lone gunman tossed tear gas into a packed movie theatre at the opening of The Dark Knight Rises and proceeded to open fire on the crowd. Many among the crowd report that they first assumed the shooting was part of the show.
Obviously it’s strange to think that such a tragic scenario could be considered entertainment news, but it is doubtful that anybody will forget the circumstances of this event. Being a midnight premiere, many of the dead or injured were undoubtedly diehard fans of the Nolan franchise, and to think that their lives were taken on what was supposed to be a happy night only serves to further illustrate the level of sadness and terror that we all feel. And make no mistake, this was the act of a terrorist. This particular film was clearly chosen for a reason, though the artistic content can certainly not be blamed.
There’s the inherent risk to living life, of course, but being shot down at a movie theatre of all places is something that likely never crossed our minds before. Now, due to the twisted and cowardly actions of one man, the idea is indelibly part of our collective consciousness. The suspect, who has been identified as 24 year old James Holmes, is thankfully in police custody. Common sense dictates that this was an isolated incident, but those who would exercise caution by staying home for the time being are probably in the right.
To the 12 poor souls who thought they were just going to see a movie last night, Rest In Peace.
